Obverse description The full arms of Sierra Leone are depicted centrally in the field, featuring a shield supported by two lions rampant, each flanked by oil palm trees. The shield bears the national emblems including a torch and mountain motif. A ribbon below the arms carries the national motto in the legend 'UNITY FREEDOM JUSTICE'. The circular legend 'REPUBLIC OF SIERRA LEONE 2020' arcs around the upper field, while the denomination '$20' appears in the lower exergue. The Pobjoy Mint mark 'PM' is visible at the lower left of the arms.

Additional information

Sierra Leone has issued commemorative coinage under licensing arrangements with the Pobjoy Mint and similar private minting houses since the 1980s, producing an enormous volume of wildlife-themed bullion and collector pieces that bear little relationship to domestic monetary policy. These issues circulate almost exclusively in the international collector market and are legal tender in name only.

The two-troy-ounce specification places this squarely in the format favored by such programs through the late 2010s and into 2020, competing directly with similar wildlife rounds from the Perth and New Zealand mints.
