Obverse description The obverse is printed in black and green with red serial numbers, centred on a large guilloche underprint bearing the denomination numeral "XX". Two portrait vignettes flank the central design — a bearded gentleman to the left and a clean-shaven gentleman to the right — with the Bank of Montreal coat of arms at centre surmounting the legend "Twenty Dollars". The heading reads "The Bank of Montreal / Will Pay to Bearer on Demand" with the paid-up capital inscription along the top border, the date "Montreal, Nov. 3rd 1914" and signature lines for Countersigned and President below the central vignette.

Reverse description The reverse is engraved in a uniform dark green, with a central intaglio vignette of the Bank of Montreal's main branch building — a neoclassical structure with a grand Corinthian-columned portico — set against an open sky with figures and carriages at street level. Flanking the central vignette are large denomination numerals "20" set within ornate lathe-work panels, with the inscription "BANK OF MONTREAL" along the top border and "Twenty Dollars" along the lower margin.
