B. Duncan of Columbia, South Carolina was one of several southern printers pressed into service after the Confederacy found itself cut off from the established Northern and European banknote firms it had relied on before secession. Duncan's output for the 1861 series was substantial but technically uneven — the intaglio work lacks the precision of contemporaries like the National Bank Note Company, and the cotton-fiber paper sourced domestically varied noticeably in thickness and color across print runs.

The Confederacy's decision to issue multiple denominations through competing regional printers created an authentication nightmare almost immediately, with counterfeits circulating alongside genuine notes within months of issue.
