Obverse description The right portion of the note is occupied by an intaglio portrait of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff (1797–1848), German lyric poet, with her name and life dates in vertical lettering along the right margin beside the denomination numeral '20' and the inscription 'ZWANZIG DEUTSCHE MARK'; the issuing authority 'DEUTSCHE BUNDESBANK', the date 'Frankfurt am Main, 1. August 1991', and a facsimile signature appear on the left panel against a multicolour guilloche underprint in green tones. To the left of the portrait a vignette of Meersburg Castle is rendered within the underprint, accompanied by the word 'Banknote' in Gothic script and a stylised rose sprig. The large numeral '20' in green anchors the left field, and the overall composition reflects the precision intaglio work characteristic of Bundesdruckerei production.
