Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of the United Nations, this was part of a wave of commemorative coinage produced by smaller member states in 1995 — many of them, like The Gambia, with no particular institutional connection to the UN's founding but with active relationships with overseas coin dealers who arranged such issues for collector markets. The Gambia's 20 Dalasi series from this period was essentially a vehicle for that trade, struck in limited quantities and never intended for domestic circulation.
