Additional information

The Gambia issued this piece as one of several commemorative coinages marking the 1997 handover of Hong Kong from British to Chinese sovereignty — a diplomatic event that generated an extraordinary volume of commemorative issues worldwide, mostly from small nations with no direct connection to either party. The Central Bank of The Gambia was among the more prolific issuers of such opportunistic commemoratives during the 1990s.

KM#38 is copper-nickel rather than the silver used in the more widely collected variants of this handover series.
