Additional information

World Food Day was established by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1979 and first observed on October 16, 1981 — marking the FAO's own founding date in 1945. The Gambia's participation in the commemorative coinage program was part of a broader push by the FAO to enlist developing nations as issuers, leveraging numismatic sales in Western collector markets to fund agricultural outreach. The Gambia, one of Africa's smallest and most food-insecure nations at the time, was a pointed choice of issuer.
