The Gambia's wildlife coin program of the 1990s was aimed squarely at the international collector market rather than domestic circulation. The .5833 fineness — 14-karat — was a deliberate commercial choice, lowering production cost while keeping the piece nominally gold, a combination that appealed to mid-tier bullion gift buyers rather than serious numismatists.
KM#43 is catalogued without a recorded mintage in most references, which is itself telling: issues of this type were typically produced in small contract runs by foreign mints on behalf of the issuing authority, with Pobjoy Mint handling much of the Gambian program during this decade.
