The Tesouro Nacional series of the early 1940s was Brazil's response to wartime monetary pressure — the country had entered World War II on the Allied side in 1942, and the government needed circulating paper that could be produced reliably abroad while domestic printing capacity remained constrained. ABNC in New York was the logical contractor, having maintained a long relationship with Brazilian fiscal authorities stretching back decades.
The "autographed" designation refers to hand-signed authorization signatures applied to individual notes, a practice that distinguished this first print from later mechanically signed issues in the same series. These manual signatures are the primary diagnostic for identifying 1st print examples.
