| Obverse description | Blue intaglio and offset on polychrome underprint, with a central vignette of Marshal Manoel Deodoro da Fonseca, first President of the Brazilian Republic (1889–1891), set within an ornate engraved frame flanked on both sides by the denomination numeral 20. The portrait is rendered with fine intaglio line work characteristic of American Bank Note Company production, with decorative guilloche elements framing the composition. The Tesouro Nacional series of the early 1940s was Brazil's response to wartime monetary pressure — the country had entered World War II on the Allied side in 1942, and the government needed circulating paper that could be produced reliably abroad while domestic printing capacity remained constrained. ABNC in New York was the logical contractor, having maintained a long relationship with Brazilian fiscal authorities stretching back decades.
The "autographed" designation refers to hand-signed authorization signatures applied to individual notes, a practice that distinguished this first print from later mechanically signed issues in the same series. These manual signatures are the primary diagnostic for identifying 1st print examples.
