Charles I issued this coin in the final year of the Habsburg empire's existence — the armistice came in November 1918, and he formally renounced participation in state affairs on November 11, the same day Germany signed its own armistice. He never abdicated. That legal ambiguity complicated Austrian politics for years and allowed legitimist movements to argue his claim remained intact.
The 1918 date is scarce relative to earlier Corona gold issues, with production almost certainly disrupted by wartime metal shortages and the administrative collapse preceding dissolution of the dual monarchy.
