The Banco Central de Nicaragua was only established in 1960, replacing the older Banco Nacional as the sole note-issuing authority. This 1962 issue is therefore among the earliest emissions under the new central bank structure, printed by the American Bank Note Company during a period when Nicaragua's monetary administration was being reorganized under the Somoza government with technical assistance from the International Monetary Fund.
ABNC's contract work for Central American issuers in the early 1960s used intaglio printing throughout, which gives these Nicaraguan notes a characteristic ink relief detectable by touch even on circulated examples.
