Waterlow & Sons printed this note just five years before the firm's collapse — the company folded in 1961 after a prolonged financial decline, ending 150 years of banknote production. Costa Rica had been a Waterlow client for decades, and the relationship terminated only because the printer did, not by any deliberate change in procurement policy.
The Series A designation on the 20 Colones places it among the earlier postwar issues from the Banco Central, which had itself only been established in 1950, replacing the older system of commercial bank currency.
