| Obverse description | Left-facing laureate bust of Queen Victoria, her hair elaborately coiffed and adorned with a wreath of laurel leaves, engraved in high relief by Leonard C. Wyon. The truncation of the neck is cleanly cut, set against a smooth field with rich toned surfaces. The circumferential legend reads VICTORIA DEI GRATIA REGINA, disposed around the upper arc, with CANADA positioned along the lower arc. The portrait reflects the refined Young Head style characteristic of Royal Mint issues of this era, framed by a beaded border. |

| Reverse description | Central denomination 20 CENTS in two lines, with the date 1871 below, all within a wreath of maple leaves tied at the base with a ribbon bow. A St. Edward's Crown surmounts the wreath at the apex, rendered in fine detail. The field displays richly toned iridescent surfaces consistent with a proof or specimen striking. The design is enclosed by a beaded border running the full circumference of the coin. |
