Jamaica decimalized its currency in 1969, replacing the pound system with dollars and cents. KM#55 belongs to the first generation of decimal coinage issued under the Bank of Jamaica, a series designed by Christopher Ironside, who also created the reverse designs for British decimal coinage introduced in 1971. The "narrow legend" distinction separates this from a subsequent variety with a wider-spaced inscription — a minor but catalogued difference arising from die modification during the run.
