Swaziland's switch to nickel plated steel for this denomination was driven by the same metal-cost pressures that pushed dozens of African central banks away from solid nickel and cupronickel during the 2000s commodity boom. The magnetic property is a direct consequence of the steel core — useful for automated coin sorting and vending equipment, though Swaziland's retail infrastructure made that a secondary concern at best.

The second portrait of Mswati III reflects a recut issued as the king aged out of his earlier effigy.
