The Straits Settlements reduced silver fineness from .800 to .600 in 1916, a direct consequence of wartime metal demands that pushed the market price of silver uncomfortably close to the intrinsic value of circulating coinage. The change applied across the subsidiary silver denominations simultaneously and was never reversed — the colony's coinage never returned to the higher standard.
