Reverse description The reverse displays the iconic platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) design first introduced on the Australian 20-cent coin in 1966, here rendered in high-relief proof quality. The animal is depicted swimming, shown in dynamic profile with distinctive duck-bill, webbed forepaws, and broad flat tail, set against undulating water rendered with graceful flowing lines. The large numeral 20, representing the denomination in cents, is superimposed prominently in the upper field. The designer's initials SD appear discreetly to the lower left of the composition.

Additional information

The sixth portrait of Elizabeth II was completed by sculptor Sheryl Brown and approved for use on Australian coinage in 2022 — the same year the Queen died. It never appeared on circulating coinage. Its only application has been on collector issues like this one, making it a portrait that exists entirely outside everyday commerce, commissioned for a reign that ended before the dies were ever put to work in volume.
