Obverse description Fourth crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, after the portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The legend NEW ZEALAND and ELIZABETH II flank the portrait, with the engraver's initials IRB truncated at the neck. The date appears below the effigy in the lower field.

Reverse description A boldly rendered Maori tiki figure, known as Pukaki, occupies the central field, depicted frontally in the traditional carved style with intricate spiral koru motifs covering the body and prominent facial features including a protruding tongue. Two smaller subsidiary figures are held at the figure's midsection. Flowing Maori decorative scrollwork in the koru style flanks the central carving on either side. The denomination numeral 20 is incused in large characters along the lower portion of the field.
