Issued to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, this coin was part of Australia's broader commemorative program timed to the August 2005 ceremonies. Australia lost over 27,000 personnel during the conflict, and the "Coming Home" framing specifically references the return of servicemen and women — many of whom had been held as prisoners of war in the Pacific theater, some for years after the Japanese surrender in September 1945.
