Released as part of the Royal Australian Mint's broader 2018 Anzac centenary program, this piece belongs to a multi-coin series marking the final years of World War I commemorations. The "Independent" theme references the role of the Australian Corps operating under General John Monash from mid-1918 — a command structure that placed Australian troops under Australian leadership for the first time on the Western Front, a point of considerable national significance at the time and one Monash himself lobbied hard to achieve.
