This coin commemorates Australian service during the Greek and Cretan campaigns of April–May 1941, among the most operationally compressed disasters in the country's Second World War record. Some 17,000 Australian troops were committed to the defence of Greece; within three weeks the Allied position had collapsed under German Army Group 12, and the Royal Australian Navy and Royal Navy conducted a fighting evacuation under continuous Luftwaffe attack. Crete followed almost immediately, ending in a second evacuation by June 1.
Over 9,000 Australians were killed, wounded, or captured across both campaigns in under two months.
