The Bank of Ontario was chartered in 1857 under Upper Canadian banking legislation, though it operated on shaky financial footing almost from the start. This 20-cent fractional note belongs to a period when small-denomination paper was filling a genuine void — silver coinage was chronically scarce in the Province of Canada throughout the late 1850s and early 1860s, hoarded or exported faster than mints could supply it.
The Bank of Ontario collapsed in 1863, making its note issues short-lived and the surviving paper correspondingly thin on the ground.
