| Obverse description | Central device features the Zimbabwe Bird, a stylized soapstone raptor figure derived from monolithic sculptures excavated at the ancient city of Great Zimbabwe, the former capital of the Monomotapa Empire and associated with the Gokomere ancestors of the Shona people, dated to between the 12th and 14th centuries. The bird stands facing left atop a pedestal in high relief at the center of the field. The legend 'ZIMBABWE' arcs along the upper periphery, with the date appearing below the central device. |
