Vallfogona de Riucorb is a small municipality in the comarca of Conca de Barberà, and like hundreds of Catalan towns during the Spanish Civil War, it faced an acute shortage of small-denomination coin. The Republican government's wartime monetary disorder pushed local councils to issue their own emergency fractional currency — these municipally-stamped cardboard pieces were legal within the issuing community and nowhere else. Imprenta A. Figueres in Tàrrega supplied many such notes to surrounding towns, making printer-matched pairs across different issuers relatively common in this geographic cluster.
