Sort is a small town in the Pallars Sobirà comarca of Lleida province, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish municipalities, it was forced into printing its own emergency fractional currency during the Civil War after metallic coinage vanished almost entirely from circulation by mid-1936. The Republican government's inability to supply small change to the provinces left local councils, cooperatives, and even individual businesses to fill the gap themselves — Turró catalogs over 2,000 such emissions from Catalonia alone.
Josep Güell's print shop in La Pobla de Segur served several surrounding municipalities in the Pallars region, which accounts for a certain visual and material consistency across notes from this pocket of the Pyrenean foothills. Thick card stock was a practical choice: it survived handling better than lightweight paper and was harder to reproduce informally.
