Belgium experimented with zinc coinage in 1860 as a potential solution to the chronic shortage of small-denomination circulating pieces, but the metal proved deeply unpractical — it corroded rapidly in pocket conditions and was difficult to strike cleanly. The project was abandoned before any zinc pieces entered circulation, leaving these 20 centimes patterns as workshop survivors rather than policy outcomes.
