| Obverse description | Left-facing helmeted bust of Mercury, wearing a winged petasus with finely detailed curling hair visible beneath, engraved in the classical style by Jean-Auguste Barre. The effigy is set within an inner beaded circle, with the legend REPUBLIQUE D'HAITI arcing across the upper field and the date 1877 positioned at the bottom. The word ESSAI appears in small letters in the lower field just below the truncation of the bust. Two six-pointed stars flank the date at the lower left and right, and the entire design is bordered by a reeded outer rim. |
