Additional information

Haiti's 1877 coinage program came during the presidency of Boisrond-Canal, who had seized power the previous year following the turbulent fall of Michel Domingue. Essai pieces from this period were produced as trial strikes to evaluate proposed designs before committing to full production runs — in Haiti's case, often struck in Paris at the Monnaie de Paris, which handled much of the republic's coinage contracting throughout the nineteenth century. Whether this particular essai led to a circulating issue is not established by the Pn75 reference alone.
