Obverse description Right-facing bust of Marianne wearing a Phrygian cap, rendered in a stylised modernist manner by engraver J. Hébert-Coëffin, whose name appears incuse along the truncation at left. The effigy occupies the greater part of the field, with the facial features rendered in clean, simplified lines characteristic of mid-20th-century French medallic art. The circular legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE runs along the left and right periphery of the coin.

Reverse description A prominent upright wheat ear dominates the centre of the field, its full head of grain rendered in high relief with fine stalk lines radiating outward behind it. To the left of the wheat ear, the denomination 20 CENTIMES is inscribed in bold characters across two lines, with the word ESSAI appearing above the numeral. The date 1961 is placed in the lower exergue, flanked by two small cornucopia mint marks. The Republican motto LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE is distributed around the full circumference of the coin as the outer legend.
