Regimental token currency of this kind emerged from a specific practical problem: French and Belgian small change disappeared from circulation almost immediately after August 1914, hoarded by civilians and absorbed by armies operating on unfamiliar monetary terrain. British regiments stationed in northern France and Flanders began issuing their own scrip to enable routine canteen and mess transactions — not by official sanction, but by necessity and local command initiative.
The 11th Battalion Royal Fusiliers was a Kitchener's Army unit, raised in 1914 as part of the wartime expansion. Yellow paper was a common choice for low-denomination fractional scrip, distinguishing it from higher values within the same regimental issue.
