Obverse description Bare-headed right-facing effigy of King Vittorio Emanuele II with prominent moustache, rendered in high relief. The king's truncated bust faces right in a naturalistic portrait style typical of mid-19th century Italian coinage. The legend VITTORIO EMANUELE II arcs along the upper periphery, while the engraver's name FERRARIS and the date appear in the lower exergue below the bust truncation.

Reverse description The denomination 20 CENTESIMI is displayed prominently in two lines across the centre of the field in large, bold Roman numerals and lettering. The circular legend REGNO D'ITALIA arcs along the upper periphery. A finely engraved semicircular wreath of laurel branches frames the lower portion of the design, tied at the base with a decorative ribbon bow. The mint mark, consisting of the letters M BN or T BN enclosed within a rectangular cartouche, appears in the exergue below the wreath.
