Additional information

Colombia's federal Rionegro Constitution of 1863 created the loose confederation of sovereign states that became the United States of Colombia, but by 1886 that experiment was effectively over. The centralist regeneration movement under Rafael Núñez was dismantling the federalist structure, and the republic would be formally reconstituted as simply "República de Colombia" later that same year — making this issue one of the last struck under the old national title.

The .500 fineness was a deliberate reduction from earlier silver standards, reflecting chronic fiscal pressure on the Colombian treasury throughout the 1880s.
