The State of Oaxaca issued its own copper coinage in 1915 after the provisional government under José Inés Dávila declared the state's sovereignty from the Carranza-controlled federal apparatus. With national currency in freefall and competing revolutionary factions issuing their own paper and metal money across Mexico, local authorities had little choice but to produce something the population would accept for daily transactions. Oaxaca's issues are notably crude by minting standards — the result of improvised facilities rather than any established mint infrastructure.
