Oaxaca's provisional coinage of 1915 was authorized by General José Inés Dávila under the authority of Guillermo Meixueiro, who controlled the state as part of the Soberanista movement resisting both Carranza's Constitutionalists and the broader chaos of the Mexican Revolution. The series was an explicit act of political defiance — Oaxaca declared itself a sovereign state in 1915 and needed a functioning local currency to back that claim.
These copper pieces circulated in a state effectively cut off from the national monetary system, and many saw genuine hard use before the Soberanista movement collapsed in 1920.
