The 1960 date places this coin squarely within Colombia's sesquicentennial commemoration of the 1810 declaration of independence from Spain — the "20 de Julio" proclamation issued in Bogotá. The Banco de la República coordinated a broader recoinage program around this anniversary, updating several circulating denominations with independence-themed designs. Colombia's mint in Bogotá, the Casa de Moneda, had been operating continuously since 1621, making it one of the oldest functioning mints in the Americas at the time of striking.
