Comments

The Liga Nacional Defensora de la Libertad Religiosa was the political wing of the Cristero movement, which rose against the Mexican government's enforcement of the anticlerical provisions of the 1917 Constitution — particularly Articles 3, 5, 24, and 130, which banned religious education, monastic orders, and public worship. When President Calles moved to implement these laws aggressively from 1926, armed rebellion followed. This note was issued by that civilian organization to fund and supply the Ejército Cristero in the field.

Emergency fractional currency from insurgent forces rarely survives in quantity. These circulated in territories temporarily under Cristero control in Jalisco, Guanajuato, and Michoacán — the heartland of the rebellion.
