KM#224 was struck during a period when Colombia's monetary system was under sustained pressure from inflation and a persistent balance-of-payments deficit. The shift to copper-nickel for this denomination in the early 1960s was a direct cost-cutting response — silver had become economically untenable for coins of this face value, and the Banco de la República was not alone in making that calculation across Latin America during these years.
