Obverse description Left-facing bust of Getúlio Dornelles Vargas, President of Brazil, depicted in civilian attire with a bow tie, rendered in high relief against a plain field. The portrait is boldly modelled with strong facial definition. The legend GETULIO VARGAS arcs along the upper left periphery, and BRASIL continues along the upper right, separated by a five-pointed star at the top. The name and title appear in raised Latin lettering following the coin's circumference.

Additional information

Brazil's wartime metal shortages forced a rapid compositional shuffle across its coinage in the early 1940s. The copper-nickel 20 centavos was itself a brief interlude — the series would shift to aluminum-bronze almost immediately after, making the 1942–1943 run one of the shorter-lived compositions in the Vargas-era decimal sequence.
