The Banco de la Nación Argentina was itself only founded in 1891, replacing the failed Banco Nacional that had collapsed amid the Baring Crisis — the sovereign debt catastrophe that nearly bankrupted Argentina and destabilized London's financial markets simultaneously. These fractional centavo notes were issued into that recovery period, when small-denomination paper was still needed to fill the gap left by scarce coin in everyday transactions.
Bradbury Wilkinson's involvement was typical for South American issuers of the period seeking security printing of demonstrable quality. The London connection was purely commercial.
