Obverse description Central device depicts the emblems of the Holy See during a papal interregnum: the umbraculum (pavilion or canopeum) above the crossed keys of Saint Peter, rendered without the papal tiara to signify the Sede Vacante period. The legend SEDE·VACANTE·MMV arcs along the upper periphery, with CIVITAS VATICANA inscribed along the lower rim. Twelve stars of the European Union encircle the design in the outer border, consistent with the Euro coin series aesthetic.

Reverse description The reverse follows the standard European 20 euro cent map design, featuring a stylised outline map of Western Europe occupying the right half of the field, with the large numeral '20' overlapping the map in bold relief. A vertical line divides the field, with twelve five-pointed stars arranged in a arc on the left side. The word SPECIMEN is inscribed along the upper border, and the date 2005 appears in the lower exergue.
