Additional information

Kansu (Gansu) Province sat at the far northwestern edge of Chinese territory during the warlord period, chronically underfunded and administratively fractured. Provincial minting in this era was less a monetary policy than a revenue grab — local military commanders authorized coin production to pay troops, with brass substituting for the copper that central government issues nominally required. The KM#Y397 issue falls squarely into that pattern.

Gansu's mint operations during this period were irregular enough that die workmanship varied considerably between production runs, and authentication against known genuine examples is advisable before any grade assessment.
