Szechuan's copper cash issues of this period emerged from the province's effort to modernize its coinage infrastructure following the Qing court's 1900 decree authorizing provincial mints to produce machine-struck copper coins. The Chengdu mint was notoriously inconsistent in its output, and Szechuan 20 cash pieces show wider die variety than almost any comparable provincial issue — collar alignment problems and planchet irregularities are documented features of the series, not signs of damage.
The 20 cash denomination was politically contentious; Beijing repeatedly pressured provinces to limit high-denomination copper to curb inflation, and Szechuan's continued production through 1905 reflected how loosely central authority was being observed by that point.
