Obverse description A full-length figure of a Swiss soldier (Helvetian militiaman) stands facing left at center, clad in period costume with a plumed hat, holding a large furled banner or standard in his right hand and resting his left hand on a sword at his side. The figure stands on a ground line, rendered in high relief with fine engraved detail characteristic of late 18th-century Swiss coinage. The divided legend HELVET : REPUB L : flanks the figure to the left and right respectively, with the date 1798 inscribed in the exergue below the ground line. The coin exhibits a dentilated border around the entire circumference.
