Obverse description The Coat of Arms of the Republic of Panama occupies the central field, flanked by nine five-pointed stars arranged in an arc. The legend REPUBLICA DE PANAMA and the motto PRO MUNDI BENEFICIO arc above and around the arms respectively. Below the shield, the fineness 500/1000 ORO FINO, the Franklin Mint mark FM, and the denomination 20 BALBOAS are inscribed.

Reverse description A finely detailed Figure 8 butterfly (Diaethria anna) is depicted with open wings spread symmetrically across the central field, its characteristic ocellated hindwing markings rendered in high relief. Delicate floral and foliate sprigs frame the butterfly on both sides, creating an ornate naturalistic border. The date 1981 is inscribed in large numerals along the upper rim above the butterfly.
