Obverse description Bare-headed, draped bust of Pope Gregory XVI facing left, wearing the papal zucchetto and richly ornamented cope with floral and cruciform motifs, engraver's initials N.C. visible at the truncation. The encircling Latin legend reads GREGORIVS XVI PON MAX A IV, separated by dots, with ROMA 1834 appearing in the lower portion of the field between star stops. The portrait is rendered in a neoclassical style with fine detail to the hair and vestments.

Reverse description The quartered papal arms of Gregory XVI displayed on a heraldic shield, featuring an eagle on a chalice in the dexter field and three stars above horizontal lines in the sinister field. The shield is surmounted by the papal tiara with crossed keys of Saint Peter in saltire, the keys bound with cords ending in tassels hanging to either side. The denomination BAI·20 is inscribed in the exergue below the shield in bold upright lettering.
