| Obverse description | Bare-headed, draped bust of Pope Gregory XVI facing left, wearing the papal zucchetto and richly ornamented cope with floral and cruciform motifs, engraver's initials N.C. visible at the truncation. The encircling Latin legend reads GREGORIVS XVI PON MAX A IV, separated by dots, with ROMA 1834 appearing in the lower portion of the field between star stops. The portrait is rendered in a neoclassical style with fine detail to the hair and vestments. |
