| Obverse description | Uniformed effigy of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) in three-quarter facing right, depicted wearing spectacles and a military-style open-collar tunic with epaulettes. The portrait is rendered in high relief with fine detail to the facial features and clothing. A curved Thai-script legend arcs along the left and right periphery of the field, reading the full royal name and title of the monarch. |

Issued to mark the 80th anniversary of Thammasat University, founded in 1934 by Pridi Phanomyong — a jurist and statesman who was later forced into permanent exile following the 1947 coup. The university he built became ground zero for Thai student activism, most catastrophically in October 1976 when a massacre on its grounds ended a brief period of democratic governance and left the death toll disputed to this day.
