Issued to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Thailand's first postage stamp, introduced during the reign of Rama IV (Mongkut) in 1883 — itself already a delayed milestone, as Mongkut had died in 1868 and never saw a Thai postal system materialize during his lifetime. The stamp program was finally realized under his son Chulalongkorn.
