Bhumibol Adulyadej's 75th birthday in 2002 fell during a period of sustained royal commemoration — the Thai government had been issuing celebratory coinage for major milestones of his reign since the 1960s, a practice that accelerated sharply after the 1997 financial crisis as monarchy-centered national identity gained renewed political weight. By this point in his reign, Bhumibol had already surpassed every previous Thai monarch in longevity on the throne, having acceded in 1946.
