Madagascar's post-independence monetary system involved a deliberate dual-currency structure in which the ariary — a pre-colonial unit equal to five francs malgaches — ran alongside the franc as a parallel denomination until the franc was fully abandoned in 2005. The 1992 issue falls within a period of significant political turbulence, when mass strikes and protests forced the resignation of President Didier Ratsiraka's single-party government and a transitional authority took control pending a new constitution.
The "motto A" designation distinguishes this variety by its inscription variant, a cataloging distinction that points to at least one parallel die used in the same production run.
