Reverse description Central field dominated by the elaborate tughra (royal cipher) of Muhammad Nadir Shah, rendered in ornate calligraphic style with intertwined vertical strokes and looping horizontal elements characteristic of Afghan royal monograms. A floral ornament or seal appears in the upper left of the field, with the denomination numeral in the upper right. The tughra is enclosed within a wreath of olive and oak branches springing from the base, with a fine beaded border surrounding the entire composition.

Additional information

Muhammed Nadir Shah came to power in October 1929 after defeating Habibullah Kalakani — the Tajik rebel leader known as "Bacha-i Saqao" — who had himself seized Kabul from Amanullah Khan earlier that year. The country had cycled through three rulers in under twelve months. These gold issues were part of an immediate effort to assert legitimate authority and stabilize a monetary system badly disrupted by the civil conflict.

Nadir Shah was assassinated in November 1933, and this series spans only his reign. Fr#37 is among the scarcer of his gold denominations by surviving population.
