Pick 68 was issued as part of the 2002 redenomination that replaced the chaotic multi-issuer afghani system — by the late 1990s, two rival governments had each been printing their own currency, causing wild regional variation in acceptance and value. The new Da Afghanistan Bank series was designed to consolidate monetary authority under the Bonn Agreement transitional administration, with the 20 afghani filling the lower-middle denomination slot of a freshly structured scale.
Watermark-only security on this value reflects the modest anti-counterfeiting budget allocated to lower denominations in the series. Higher values received security threads.
